The art of the hooked rug

When the youngsters show a desire to hook rugs, set them at a piece all their own. It is good for the young to learn a craft at an early age.

One of the prettiest sights I've ever seen was my little seven-year old granddaughter Jane bending over her frame, diligently hooking a pansy footstool. It has made her conscious of the "whiskers," ruffled edges, and the "nose and lip" on every real pansy she sees.

It has taught her appreciation of another's work. "Oh, that's good, Grandma," she will say about the leaf in my rug, or stopping to look at Aunt Tibby's rug: "My, you do fine hooking, Aunt Tibby," she'll say, as she rubs her fingers across the surface.
