Rugs: hooking

During those earliest years, the immediate problem of finding time to pursue my hobby and to study all the fascinating things about it, left me no time to imagine what might later develop.

In those years, I was filling first my own need for an interest, and in doing so, I was also fulfilling the need of a woman — any woman — just one at a time, who might want a certain type of rug designed especially for her home. I never thought of applying a true financial value to what I was doing.

It did not occur to me that the small price received from the sale of a pattern did not repay me for a tenth of the time required to design it. I loved what I was doing! I was concerned only with fulfilling the desire of that particular woman.

And so, in trying to satisfy the desires of many different individuals, I gradually accumulated a great many types of designs. Today I have more than a thousand.
