Working on rugs

These teachers who now represent a good share of the states, not only send in impressive examples of their best work each year, but they travel from all over the country to attend our Teachers' Conferences just previous to these Exhibits.

For, in sponsoring this craft, my main idea has been to give, give, give, — for only as we give shall we receive. In the meantime, when war was declared in December 1941, I realized that burlap would become a strategic item and be unobtainable.

Therefore, the activity of our craft was threatened just at a time when women most needed this outlet for their morale. And so, in order to sustain their courage and to give impetus to their interest, I started a monthly publication called the LETTER SERVICE.

It was in the nature of general instruction in the art of shading and highlighting some particular flower, leaf or detail of a design. But most of all, it was to include subjects of interest to ruggers which might hold our group together until this awful period of war was over.
